Substituting Shirataki Noodles for Pasta for the Diet Conscious

Sharitaki noodles are considered to be healthy noodles due to its low calorie and low carbohydrate contents.  This Japanese noodle is translucent, thin and is gelatinous in form and is considered to be a great and healthier substitute for pasta.  It can from the “konjac” plant and got its name from shirataki meaning white waterfall based on its appearance.  It has very little flavor due mainly to the fact that it is consist of water and a dietary fiber that is water-soluble called “glucomannan”.

The sharitaki noodles may be bought from supermarket in both dry and wet forms.  Two types of this noodles that are very popular in the US market is the traditional and the tofu-based sharitaki noodles.  The traditional one, which is clearly the healthier have zero calories, zero gluten and zero net carbo.  Those who are on card diet would love these noodles.  This is why this is considered to be the best replacement for pasta for the diet conscious.
 
The tofu-cased on the other hand has shorter shelf life compared to the traditional type and needs to be refrigerated after it is opened.  While it may contain carbohydrates, it is nevertheless very minimal.  This type is also becoming very popular in the US.  First time users may find the pungent not too pleasing.  No need to worry since this is just normal for the sharitaki noodles.
